El Centro earthquake, 1940

The 1940 El Centro earthquake struck on the 18th of May 1940, due to a rupture of the Imperial Fault, and was the strongest recorded earthquake to hit the Imperial Valley. The main earthquake happened at 9:35 pm local time (magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale, intensity X), with a strong secondary quake at 10:51 pm (magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale, intensity IX).
